Ohio enacts 2 new self-defense/firearm laws
Jim Irvine was on hand as Governor DeWine signed HB 452 (Which had SB 32 amended into it before passage) which grants members of nonprofits/churches immunity when acting in “self-defense or defense of another when performed during the commission, or imminent commission, of an offense of violence to protect the members or guests” of that nonprofit/church.
“This is something we have been working on for eight years” said Jim Irvine, co-director of FASTER Saves Lives. “We thank Senator Schaffer for his tireless work for almost a decade to protect the few people who are protecting all the other people. We also thank Representative Andrea White who worked with and helped coordinate this change to her bill.
In prior sessions, we were able to get immunity for “churches” but the immunity for their members was always stripped out before passage. This potentially left the people who are volunteering on the hook for the damage a killer did. It was unfair and unjust.
Security teams, whether formal or informal, whether in schools, churches, homes or businesses are a critical layer of protection when violence strikes. There is a stark difference in body count and casualties depending on if helpless victims are protected by on site security (including themselves) or if they helplessly wait for outside help to be notified, arrive, orient, and act.

Irvine was also on hand for the signing of SB 58 (which was amended to include SB 148). This combines two great bills that:
- · Prohibit any entity from requiring people pay a fee to own a firearm or any part of a firearm
- · Prohibit any entity from requiring insurance to own a firearm
- · Prohibit government from compiling lists or registries of gun owners
- · Prohibit financial institutions from assigning codes to designate firearms or parts of firearms
- · Prohibit financial institutions from declining/blocking any sale based on it being a firearm or parts for firearms transactions
Many people attending FASTER classes are new to firearms ownership. They spend in excess of $1,000 to purchase a firearm, spare magazines, holsters, ammunition, belts, eye and ear protection and more. They are shocked at how hostile some people, industries, and governments are to them volunteering to spend their own time and money to protect others’ kids! Some great people have been driven away from their passion of helping kids because of such hostility, threats, and intimidation. Senator Johnson’s bills helps address some of the most egregious issues facing those who would own or use a gun to defend their life, or the life of innocent children in their classrooms and churches.

We thank all those who helped improve Ohio law making first responders and all our community safer.
